Resume writing is critical in controlling the image you present to employers and recruiters. Your resume is your sales brochure. In many cases it is the only opportunity you will have to present yourself to a potential employer. With employers and recruiters receiving hundreds of resumes, today's resume writing requires that you hook an employers or recruiters attention within a 5-second glance. It must be neat and easy to read. Spelling and punctuation errors are fatal. Using objective statements sometimes limits the scope of opportunities you will be considered for. Unless you are gearing your resume for one particular opening it is usually best to leave out your objective statement. A summary of skills is more appropriate. In the Information Systems field a chronological format is preferred, it starts with your current position and travels back. It lists dates, job titles, employer and employer's location and technical skills used on each position or project. Do not list your technical skills just in the summary at the beginning. A hiring manager wants to know what technical abilities you have used in each position. This is the greatest fault with most resumes. Time is of the essences in finding a position . It takes time for a recruiter or manager to ask an applicant what languages or environments they used in last or present position. Someone with a good detailed resume may get the interview just because no one has to contact the applicant to find out more details. Give priority to your skills. Employers want to know what you can do, not just where you have been. Scannable resume systems are set up to read skills. Place the important skills at the beginning of the resume where employers can see them first. Then list them in each position or project you used them in.
Place your name, address, phone and email address in a block format below the top margin. This key information helps recruiters and employers to reach you and is the preferred format for scannable systems which most recruiters use.
Use generous margins and plenty of white space. One-inch margins enhance the readability of your resume. Balance the body of the resume so that the content is not compressed.
Use vertical and horizontal lines sparingly. (Scanning systems can confuse lines and characters.)
Avoid graphics and shading.
Use a font size between 8 and 12. Do not use script, italic or underling. Highlight information using bold or CAPTIAL letters.
